Airbus brought handovers of its widebody A330neo aircraft to a near standstill over the summer of 2026 after discovering a stray tool inside the horizontal tail plane structure during a pre-delivery inspection. The manufacturer delivered zero A330neos in June and July 2026, with only a single aircraft delivered in August to Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines. The root cause has since been identified, and Airbus confirms that monthly handovers have officially resumed.
The issue came to light during a pre-delivery inspection when a stray object was discovered inside the structure of an aircraft, with the defect isolated to the horizontal tail plane manufactured at Airbus’s facilities in Spain. Foreign Object Damage posed a serious security risk, prompting intense internal inspections along the production line to ensure no other aircraft were affected. Airbus has stated that the incident was isolated and no indication exists that any A330neo jets already in active airline service require corrective actions or grounding.
The extensive inspection process drastically cut widebody handovers over the summer months compared to typical production rates, with nine aircraft delivered between March and May and only one between June and August. While production did not stop entirely, the extra quality checks left built aircraft sitting on the line waiting for validation. This widebody bottleneck adds to Airbus’s manufacturing challenges, as the company has simultaneously worked through separate supply chain component shortages and engine delays for its best-selling narrowbody A320 family. Despite the temporary drop in monthly handovers, Airbus maintains that its overall 2026 commercial delivery guidance of roughly 850 to 890 aircraft remains within reach.
