The hotel association Ashotel has proposed to the Canary Islands government the creation of a network of climate refuges in hotels on Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.
During extreme heat alerts from AEMET, participating hotels would open air-conditioned spaces to the public, providing free drinking water and temporary shelter.
Establishments must meet criteria including climatised areas, accessibility, and carbon footprint tracking. Several hotel groups have already expressed interest. The project highlights tourism’s role in societal resilience to climate change through public-private collaboration.
