Airlines for Australia has proposed closing Sydney Kingsford Smith’s control tower at night to allow for two overnight air traffic controllers to move to daytime shifts and help ease staffing shortages. The airport already has a 2300L to 0600L curfew but a lack of on-duty air traffic control could cause issues to flights dealing with emergencies or those carrying medical patients which are exempt from the curfew under the current rules.
The proposal aims to address staffing shortages at the airport. The curfew currently in place restricts flights between 2300L and 0600L. Emergency and medical flights are exempt from the curfew. The proposal is under consideration.
