Austrian Airlines and EVA Air adopt Lufthansa Technik’s AeroShark surface technology to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The technology involves applying a film with riblets aligned to airflow, mimicking shark skin properties to reduce air resistance.

Austrian Airlines to apply the technology to four of its 777-200ERs, resulting in approximately 1% fuel consumption saving per flight.

EVA Air plans to apply AeroShark technology to its entire fleet of nine Boeing 777F freighters for fuel and CO2 emissions reduction.

Austrian COO Francesco Sciortino said: “we take our responsibility seriously and take every possible step to reduce CO2 emissions within our flight operations. At one percent, the sharkskin’s efficiency potential may not sound like much, but in total it will save thousands of tonnes of CO2 per year on long-haul flights. Even though our B777s are in their final years of service”, the investment was being made to move the carrier “one step closer” to its target of reducing CO2 emissions by 30.6 per cent by 2030 compared to 2019.”
