Battery hybrid power key to new green Hurtigruten

Hurtigruten reported 9pc reduction in direct emissions per guest and a 46pc reduction in NOx emissions since 2022 in their annual report, with 2023 ESG results revealing substantial reductions in carbon emissions and ambitious future plans for further improvements such as converting additional vessels to battery hybrid power.

In 2023, the ship MS Kong Harald underwent an upgrade to battery hybrid operation. By Q1 2025, Hurtigruten will have a total of four out of nine vessels operating on battery hybrid power.

Progress in other operations includes an 8pc reduction in water consumption, 4% decrease in waste generation per guest, and a significant 40pc reduction in food waste over two years.

Hurtigruten, operating as a vital coastal lifeline for 130 years, collaborates with local suppliers and focuses on sustainability, with ongoing fleet upgrades to battery hybrid power and plans for a pioneering emission-free vessel by 2030 as part of the ‘Sea Zero’ project.

CEO Hedda Felin said “in collaboration with the research institute SINTEF and 12 other Norwegian partners, Hurtigruten is spearheading the development of zero-emission ships tailored for the Norwegian coast through the ‘Sea Zero’ project.”
