Campervan holidays in Ireland are experiencing an unprecedented boom, with vehicle registrations more than doubling over the last decade according to recent figures. The number of officially registered campervans on Irish roads has reached an all-time high of 27,835 vehicles, with the market crossing the 20,000 mark for the first time only recently. Registrations have grown from just 10,000 vehicles to over 27,000, with over one-third of all active campervans registered since 2020.
A comprehensive consumer study by Aviva Insurance Ireland revealed that 40pc of people (two in five) would now actively consider taking a campervan holiday in Ireland. General domestic holidaying is rising rapidly with roughly 880,000 families taking home holidays in Ireland annually, driven by rising flight costs, airport disruptions and a desire for flexible, outdoor-focused travel. Tourism data from Repucon Consulting highlights that motorhome and campervan travellers contribute over €7.5m annually in direct expenditure to single county economies like County Clare.
Because these holidaymakers combine their transport and accommodation, they tend to spend more of their discretionary income locally on fuel, groceries, pubs and regional tourist attractions. However, because the campervan culture has exploded so quickly, it has outpaced local infrastructure, with holidaymakers now facing competitive booking windows for high-season campsite slots and a lack of dedicated Aires in certain counties. Travel Extra’s database indicates that the broader camping and mobile holiday market in Ireland will likely continue growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 4.73pc.
