  • Galway City Council refused the plans two years ago.
  • The Commission overruled concerns about height and density.
  • The site forms part of the Inner Harbour Regeneration project.

An Coimisiún Pleanála has granted final approval for a 15 storey 189 room hotel in Galway city. Summix BNM Developments Limited lodged plans in April 2024 for the site along Lough Atalia Road and Bóthar na Long. Galway City Council refused the application two years ago over proximity to a historic graveyard and concerns about density, scale and height.

The Commission determined in a two to one vote that the height would not prove excessive and would not represent overdevelopment or injure amenities. The development forms part of the Inner Harbour Regeneration Site. An additional condition requires the hotel to remain a short term tourist letting facility unless new permission is sought for residential use.

The Forthill Cemetery lies at the back of the proposed site.
