Comiso Airport in southeastern Sicily is set to experience a boost in regional and international connectivity starting October 2026. The airport will host eight new weekly flights as part of a 12-month expansion initiative funded by a €3m contract awarded to Aeroitalia by the Sicilian Region. The cornerstone of this expansion is a strategic international route connecting Comiso to Malta reviving a Mediterranean corridor previously served by Air Malta.
Local tourism boards including Federalberghi Ragusa have expressed strong support for the expansion. By late October the airport’s total weekly operations will scale to 32 weekly flights. To accommodate the growing volume the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC previously extended Comiso Airport’s operating hours from 16 to 18 hours daily.
The expansion includes Pisa services twice weekly and introduces Naples and Venice twice weekly each plus strategic links to Malta. This project aims to strengthen the Ibleo airport’s infrastructure and provide critical capacity relief to nearby hubs such as Catania Airport which has faced recurrent operational disruptions due to volcanic ash from Mount Etna.
