Baggage hall security under review after 5 dead in shooting at Fort Lauderdale airport

Panic at Fort Lauderdale

Five people died in a shooting at the baggage hall in Fort Lauderdale airport, raising questions on the futrure advisability of treating baggage hallsas a non secure zone in US airports.

The suspected shooter took a Delta flight from Alaska to Fort Lauderdale and had what appeared to be a 9mm handgun in his checked luggage. After claiming his bag, he went into toilets to load the gun before starting to shoot. Hundreds of people swarmed in panic mode back and forth between terminals at Fort Lauderdale after a mulitiple shooting.

Passengers are reacting to running armed officers attempting to run back and forth and carry out sweeps of areas.

It is normal for baggage halls to be outside sterile security zone in US airports.

Reports are between five and nine dead. The shooting took place in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2 used by Air Canada and Delta. Baggage claim is outside the security zone.

The FAA said flights heading for Fort Lauderdale will be delayed or diverted to other airports.
