The Frankfurt Airport Aircraft Noise Commission has decided on a refined operational concept for the airport which includes shifting flight paths. Developed by Germany’s air navigation service provider DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung and airport operator Fraport, the plan addresses long-term traffic growth and capacity bottlenecks. The concept prepares for a forecast of 560,000 annual aircraft movements by 2033.

The plan relies on more frequent use of existing north-westerly departure routes with over 90pc of overall flight movements remaining unchanged. The refined system activates once traffic reaches 110 flight movements per hour easing current bottleneck limits. While residents to the northwest will experience more frequent overflights, initial calculations presented to the Hessian Ministry of Transport indicate that no more total people in the region will be affected by noise than under the current system.

The updated flight parameters form the basis for redefining the region’s official noise abatement zone which is expected to wrap up review by the end of 2026. Following the commission’s approval, DFS is applying to the Federal Supervisory Authority for Air Navigation Services for the necessary statutory changes to implement the procedures.
