Glasson Lakehouse, a four-star hotel and popular wedding venue near Athlone in County Westmeath, temporarily closed on Wednesday 27 August following public health advice after a norovirus outbreak. The hotel, golf course and spa shut as a precaution, with two weddings scheduled for the weekend affected and management seeking alternative venues for guests. The Department of Public Health for HSE Dublin and Midlands began investigating the gastrointestinal illness on Monday 24 August, leading to a full voluntary shutdown of the premises.
Multiple upcoming events and weekend weddings have been disrupted, forcing management and affected couples to scramble to find alternative local venues. The outbreak has affected a significant number of guests and staff, with management cooperating with public health guidelines requiring affected staff to remain off work until symptom-free for 48 hours. Rooms advertised for September had ranged from €365 to €741 per night, and reopening details remain pending with facilities closed at least until Monday.
The HSE is investigating the outbreak with full cooperation from the premises. Management has expressed hope of reopening parts of the facility as early as next week, subject to public health clearance. The closure has affected one of the region’s premier luxury hospitality venues during a peak wedding period.
