Belfast City Council has revealed a dedicated Irish Language Hub at the MAC for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, running from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 August 2026. The hub will host free Irish language taster classes delivered by Ulster University, a tea and conversation space, and a dedicated family room. The programme includes traditional music sessions, arts and crafts workshops, yoga, circus skills and community conversations.
Irish language film screenings will feature Mise Éire, Róise & Frank and An Cailín Ciúin. Talks and discussions will explore language, heritage and cultural identity with contributions from universities and community organisations. A Belfast history walk led by Professor Fionntánn de Brú will examine the history of the Irish language in the city. Live broadcasts from Raidió Fáilte and family-focused workshops will also take place.
Bilingual directional signage, visitor information and festival dressing are being rolled out across the city. Over 800,000 visitors are expected for the Fleadh. A fringe programme of over 90 neighbourhood events has been planned, with activities beginning from 17 July.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Róis-Máire Donnelly shared, “Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann presents a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the Irish language as a living, vibrant part of our city and our shared cultural heritage.”
The dedicated hub at The MAC will create a welcoming space for everyone – from fluent speakers and lifelong learners to people who may be engaging with the language for the very first time.”
