Istanbul Airport has broken historical European records on 16 August 2026, handling 290,287 passengers and 1,739 flight movements in a single calendar day. Just weeks prior, peaks were hit on 9 August with 289,732 passengers and 1 August with 289,260 passengers. Verified by Eurocontrol tracking data, Istanbul Airport maintained its position as the busiest aviation hub in Europe throughout August 2026, averaging over 1,600 to 1,689 daily flight movements.

Turkish airports handled some 167.5m passengers in the first eight months of the year, according to the State Airports Authority General Directorate. Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Turkish transport and infrastructure minister, stated that passenger traffic increased by 2.8pc by the end of August this year compared to the same period last year, including direct transit passengers. Aircraft movements in January to August totalled 1.6m including overflights, with 667,653 on domestic routes and 611,588 on international destinations. Cargo traffic reached nearly 4m metric tons.

IGA Istanbul Airport served 56.6m passengers aboard a total of 52,468 flights in the first eight months of the year while recording 365,487 aircraft movements. The airport served nearly 8.6m passengers in August alone, 1.8m of which were on domestic and 6.7m were on international routes. Sabiha Gokcen Airport carried 33.1m passengers in January to August aboard a total of 188,833 flights. The number of passengers served at airports in tourism hubs reached a total of 41.6m in January to August.

Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister, shared: “Türkiye’s airports with the highest passenger capacities, specifically the IGA Istanbul Airport and Antalya Airport, served 81.7m passengers in just eight months, exceeding twice the number of passengers served across the country in 2002.”
