ITA Airways is set to launch flights to Caracas from Rome Fiumicino Airport on 30 March 2027. The new route revives a connection that has been absent for nearly 12 years. The service is part of new routes that have emerged since the US military captured former president Nicolás Maduro in January 2026.

ITA Airways will operate the service with a 291-seat Airbus A330-900 every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The airline’s CEO Joerg Eberhart has mentioned plans to upgrade the service to daily similar to what Alitalia once did from Rome and Milan-Malpensa. On 13 October Eberhart and Venezuelan Ambassador to Italy María Elena Uzzo signed a memorandum formalising the route.

Venezuela is home to about 160,000 registered Italian citizens while lawmaker Fabio Porta told Italy’s Chamber of Deputies in 2026 that at least 2m Venezuelans have Italian parentage. Eni has been operating in Venezuela since 1998 and in September was awarded operational management of the Junín-5 oil field under a 25-year contract. ITA’s predecessor Alitalia opened Rome-Caracas in 1951 and suspended it on 3 April 2015.

Joerg Eberhart shared “With this route, ITA Airways is placing its connectivity at the service of relations between the two countries and of the many Italian communities that have been part of Venezuela’s economic and social fabric for generations.”
