Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke has officially opened the Royal Canal Greenway Animation Project. The project spans a 130km stretch of the greenway from Maynooth through Kildare, Meath, Westmeath and Longford to Longford town and Cloondara. It was developed by Waterways Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.
The project includes 26 discovery points, interpretation signage and enhanced wayfinding. Trailhead signage at five locations and a digital visitor experience were introduced. The enhancements aim to encourage visitors to spend more time exploring towns and attractions along the route.
The project received €487,500 from the EU Just Transition Fund through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme. Waterways Ireland contributed approximately €162,500 bringing total investment to €650,000. The project is part of Fáilte Ireland’s work to diversify local economies across Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.
