Declan Collier’s London City airport handled a record 4,526,059 passengers in 2016, up 5pc on 2015, with 52pc of all passengers travelling for business.

Six new routes were launched from the airport last year – Bergerac, Alicante (although this has since been dropped by British Airways), Berlin, Bremen, Cardiff, Paris CDG and Rennes.

The airport also received approval for a £344m million expansion plan, to include seven new aircraft stands, a parallel taxiway and terminal extension.

The City Airport Development Programme will enable the airport to handle 6.5m passengers per year by 2025.

London City airport’s CEO Declan Collier said: “With 52pc of all passengers travelling for business, the five per cent year-on-year growth demonstrates that the appetite for business travel to and from London remains strong despite the unpredictable political climate, as we prepare to expand the airport in 2017 to meet increasing demand.”
