Lufthansa and Fraport have opened the Gate of the Future at Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 1 Gate A16. The redesigned departure area features digital services, real-time information displays, lounge-style seating and mobile boarding staff who assist passengers directly rather than working mainly from a counter. The trial aims to speed up boarding and improve the passenger experience.

Boarding staff circulate throughout the gate area carrying tablets equipped with boarding systems. Mobile agents approach passengers to answer questions, handle seat reservations, process upgrades and manage flight rebookings. Large wall screens and 360-degree digital displays present real-time flight details, passenger boarding status, carry-on baggage policies and connecting flight information.

The traditional row seating has been swapped for sofas and armchairs with dedicated reading lights. Work cubes offer visual privacy and integrated power outlets. Lufthansa and Fraport use the Gate A16 installation as a live test environment with customer feedback determining which features will serve as a blueprint for deployment across other gates at Frankfurt Airport.
