Junior Minister Frank Feighan has worked with the Irish government to help deliver new tourism hotels in the Shannonside region. Towns including Drumshanbo and Boyle lack sufficient hotel capacity. Several existing properties are used for refugee accommodation.

County Roscommon lags behind its neighbours registering by far the fewest tourism beds in the area. The shortage has been exacerbated because several existing hotels in surrounding towns accommodate refugees. The push for new hotels follows state investment in local infrastructure including a recently opened €1.4m water sports facility in Drumshanbo.

Minister Feighan, a TD for Sligo-Leitrim, shared that the government will look for ways to assist in developing hospitality projects. A feasibility study was launched earlier this year to explore building a new hotel in Boyle which has been without one for roughly 15 years. The shortage of visitor accommodation impacts local economic growth across counties Leitrim and Roscommon.
