Naples Capodichino Airport has officially unveiled its Masterplan 2035, a €250m strategic expansion project aimed at transforming the facility into a major intercontinental hub. Approved by the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC, the plan maps out the future of the airport with a focus on capacity management, global connectivity and urban integration. A new 15,000 square metre terminal will be built specifically to handle the surge in long-haul, extra-Schengen international and intercontinental flights.
The airport will acquire roughly 170,000 square metres of new land to develop aircraft stands, a cargo and logistics area and a new airport hotel. The expansion targets a capacity of 17.3m passengers per year by 2035, up from around 13.2m in 2025, without increasing the current hourly aircraft movement limits. The plan is tied to the upcoming Capodichino Metro Line 1 station slated to open by mid-2027, which will make Naples the first city linking its airport, high-speed rail and maritime port via underground transit.
Naples Capodichino Airport will completely close for the entire month of November 2026 to undergo an intensive €19.4m runway and taxiway renovation. During this 30-day window, major airlines including EasyJet, Vueling, Iberia and Flydubai will relocate their commercial flights to the nearby Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport while others including the Lufthansa Group plan to temporarily suspend operations or reroute via Rome Fiumicino.
