The sixth National Wool Harvest from Ireland’s Galway sheep breed has gathered growers from across the country at Athenry Livestock Mart on 18 July. President Catherine Connolly will attend the event.
The Galway Wool Co-operative has expanded from 20 to nearly 50 members and operates on a not-for-profit basis with all proceeds reinvested. Buyers have pre-booked the clip by early May at €2.50 per kilo.
Participants include AVOCA Ireland, Wool Store Ireland, The Sheep Walk Ranch in Texas, and new partner Ériu from County Wicklow.Artisans from the Galway Artisans Collective display handcrafted items while competitions recognise best fleeces in flocks of 15 sheep and under, and over 15 sheep. Traditional music, hand-shearing, and spinning demonstrations take place throughout the morning.
