Norwegian Cruise Line has cancelled its entire 2027–2028 Middle East season, citing regional instability and shifting demand patterns. The cruise line confirmed the decision on August 22, 2026, redirecting its ships to alternative itineraries in the Western Mediterranean and the South Caribbean. This marks a major strategic shift for the line, which had previously positioned the Norwegian Epic for extended Middle Eastern deployments.

Ongoing conflicts and tension in the region have made crucial waterways like the Strait of Hormuz unsafe for international cruise traffic. Severely restricted airspace over parts of the Persian Gulf makes it incredibly difficult for cruise lines to safely fly thousands of passengers in and out for their cruise start dates. Cruise lines are choosing to cancel these itineraries more than a year in advance. This gives travelers plenty of time to alter their vacation plans without a last-minute scramble.

The Western Mediterranean will now receive additional capacity with the Norwegian Epic operating year-round from Barcelona and Civitavecchia. The 2027–2028 schedule features 7-night loops calling at Marseille, Genoa, Naples, and Palma de Mallorca. The Southern Caribbean expansion includes the deployment of the Norwegian Viva, offering 10- and 11-night itineraries from San Juan, calling at Aruba, Curaçao, and Barbados. The Norwegian Pearl will operate 14-night Panama Canal transits between Miami and Los Angeles, connecting the Caribbean and Mexican Riviera markets.

The Middle East season cancellation affects ports including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Muscat. Passengers booked on affected sailings have received automatic rebooking options or full refunds. Norwegian Cruise Line has cited the ongoing geopolitical situation and lower-than-expected booking volumes as primary factors in the decision. The line continues to offer its 2028 Europe and Caribbean programmes with confirmed itineraries now open for booking.

Other cruise lines

While Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has recently canceled individual Middle East voyages—such as the final farewell sailing of the Norwegian Sky and shuffled other fleet deployments like the Norwegian Vivathrough mid-2028, they are not the only operator pulling out. A massive industry-wide exit from the Middle East for the winter 2027–2028 season is underway.

Explora Journeys: The luxury line completely scrapped its winter 2027–28 Middle East schedule. Explora I is moving to South America, and Explora V will sail the Mediterranean instead.
MSC Cruises: Reworked its entire winter calendar. It canceled the Middle East sailings for its flagship, MSC World Europa, keeping the vessel in the Western Mediterranean year-round.
AIDA Cruises: The German cruise line canceled its 2027–2028 Arabian Gulf season for the AIDAperla. The ship is being redeployed to Northern Europe and the Canary Islands. [1]
Celestyal Cruises: Completely withdrew all planned future operations in the Arabian Gulf, choosing to expand its Mediterranean itineraries instead.
