O’Hare International Airport named busiest in the United States for 2025 for flights

New Federal Aviation Administration data has confirmed that O’Hare International Airport in Chicago handled more aircraft operations than any other US airfield in 2025, with 857,392 take-offs and landings.

The airport reclaimed the top position for the first time since 2019, building on its status as the most connected US airport over the past four years. Preliminary figures show Midway International Airport ranked 38th nationally with 210,930 operations.

The achievement follows post-pandemic recovery, workforce strength, and ongoing investments in modernisation and capacity. The ORDNext programme continues, including the €1.19 billion 19-gate New Concourse D set for completion in late 2028. An aircraft moved at O’Hare or Midway every 30 seconds across 2025.

Brandon Johnson shared “This is more than a statistic, it’s a statement about Chicago’s momentum. From the runways of O’Hare to the neighborhoods across our city, Chicago is building, growing, and leading. We are open for business, open to the world, and once again setting the pace for the nation.”

Michael McMurray shared “Every one of those flights represents jobs, commerce, tourism, and opportunity. Our CDA team and our key airline partners, like United Airlines and American Airlines and their many O’Hare operations workers, move mountains every day to keep O’Hare running at this busy level, no matter the season, no matter the obstacles. This achievement belongs to them and to the people of Chicago.”
