Oneworld has become the first global airline alliance to commit all its members to the Buckingham Palace Declaration creating a united front against illegal wildlife trafficking. The declaration was completed when Samer Majali of Royal Jordanian Airlines signed the agreement during the IATA Wings of Change Europe conference in Brussels.
The commitment adds 15 airlines to the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce, a global initiative launched in 2016 by The Royal Foundation. Member airlines have pledged to enforce wildlife protection rules across a network spanning nearly 1,000 destinations. Illegal wildlife trafficking results in over $1 trillion in economic damage each year.
Member airlines committed to a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal wildlife trade, enhanced reporting and screening procedures, frontline staff training and collaboration with governments and conservation organisations. The 15 members include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways and Royal Jordanian.
Samer Majali shared “This commitment reinforces our industry’s responsibility to protect wildlife and disrupt the illegal trade that threatens biodiversity across the globe.”
