Passengers using the planned Dublin MetroLink may face a higher premium fare when boarding or exiting trains at the Dublin Airport station according to the project’s updated business case published by the National Transport Authority. This premium pricing structure is being evaluated as part of a strategy to manage the multi-billion euro project’s financial sustainability and passenger demand.
The business case projects approximately €7.35bn in fares over 30 years based on a projected 2.26bn total journeys roughly 75m trips per year. Commuters utilising a planned 3,000-space park-and-ride facility near Swords are expected to contribute an additional €350m over the same 30-year timeline.
The total state expenditure is currently estimated between €14.4bn and €17.5bn with a midpoint of €15.75bn. The 18.8 kilometre line which will connect Swords to the Dublin city centre via the airport is expected to become fully operational between 2036 and 2038. It is designed to move up to 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
