Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Al-Khater has declared the ongoing military conflict in Iran to be the single largest crisis in the airline’s 30-year history. In an interview ahead of the Qatar Economic Forum in New York Al-Khater stated that the disruptions from the war have surpassed the operational impacts of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2017 Gulf diplomatic blockade. The conflict which escalated following a US and Israeli military offensive against Tehran in late February 2026 has entered its seventh month.
Immediate regional airspace closures forced the cancellation of tens of thousands of flights across the Gulf with more than 150 Qatar Airways aircraft grounded worldwide at the peak of the restrictions. While neighbouring hubs like Kuwait International Airport and Dubai International Airport sustained projectile strikes Doha’s Hamad International Airport narrowly avoided physical damage despite being targeted. Consumer trends have shifted with travellers booking flights much later than usual due to regional volatility.
Despite the severe geopolitical headwinds Qatar Airways is actively restoring its footprint. The airline announced it has restored its network to the same number of pre-war routes mapping out 166 destinations. Passenger demand has proven resilient with flight load factors rebounding past 80pc. The carrier previously reported a net profit of $1.94bn (€1.65bn) and is prioritising business health and job preservation over executive bonuses during the ongoing crisis. To handle soaring jet fuel costs the airline is pausing its least profitable routes to conserve cash and passing increased fuel costs onto consumers.
