Riviera Travel employees visited Kisumu, Kenya in May to see the continued impact of the company’s partnership with Practical Action. The Kisumu initiative is part of Riviera’s “Doing the Right Thing” plan, which includes sustainability, managing carbon footprint, operating ethically and charitable contributions. For every guest who books, Riviera Travel donates £2.00 to support projects focused on creating cleaner, healthier rivers and communities.
The team reconnected with Gracious Mums, a group of young single mothers who developed a rotating nursery system that allows mothers to work while others care for the children. Over the past 12 months, Gracious Mums has expanded its nursery provisions and developed its own waste recycling facility, alongside building a business selling soaps and bracelets. Jane Walker stated seeing the confidence and ambition of the women involved has been incredibly inspiring.
Employees took part in the annual Race to Kisumu challenge, with an original target of £5,000 to fund a borehole at a local primary school. Colleagues completed 28,432km, raised £7,000 and held fundraising activities including bake sales, raffles, pyjama days and car boot sales. Kisumu was named among the inaugural “20 Cities Towards Zero Waste” by the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste.
Jane Walker, Head of Charity Team, shared, “Seeing the confidence and ambition of the women involved has been incredibly inspiring and serves as a powerful reminder of why this partnership matters
