Ryanair has announced a record winter 2026 programme for Sicily with 88 routes including 17 new ones aiming to carry more than 12.5m passengers a year. The figure represents a 9pc increase. The expansion is driven by the Sicilian government’s abolition of the municipal tax at smaller regional airports.

The airline is also reducing services at Alghero and Olbia in Sardinia citing the continued municipal tax. Ryanair cut winter capacity by 15pc in Alghero and 50pc in Olbia. The airline continues to open new bases in other Italian regions that have abolished the tax.

Ryanair announced zero growth in Rome citing rising airport fees and a strict flight cap at Ciampino Airport. The airline is dropping up to 2m seats across various European markets including adjustments in Germany, Spain, Portugal and Greece to limit exposure to high winter jet fuel costs.
