shane ross tourism ireland_6067Dublin airport’s parallel runway may not go ahead as planned. The cabinet is to approve an independent review into Dublin Airport’s parallel runway today, set up to address the concerns of local residents, mostly from Portmarnock.which is 8km from the airport but on the direct flight path.

The review may delay the runway past the planning permission expiration date. Minister for Transport Shane Ross is to bring a memo to Cabinet. The long-deferred parrallel runway received planning approval in 2007, but it was deferred following the economic downturn.

The growth plan for Dublin airport, which includes new Trans-Atlantic services to as many as 15 north American airprots and long haul routes ot Asia and southern Africa, wil almost certainly have to be deferred if the planning permission expires.

An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the project in 2007 but subject to conditions limiting night flights at the airport to 65. The DAA wants that restriction lifted as the current figure is already 99 flights and that is expected to grow.

The DAA is now anxious to proceed with the €320m project before planning approval expires, as the number of people using the airport is going to hit 27.9m in 2026 and 31m in 2017 at the current growth trajectory.
