Shannon Airport has received approval for fresh internal upgrades including the green light to repurpose a disused restaurant and bar area. The developments form part of a broader €40 million capital investment programme at the Clare airport. Planning permission has been issued to transform the airport’s disused upper-level restaurant and bar spaces into active commercial or operational zones.

As part of a core €15 million terminal project contracted to Galway-based OCC Construction, workers are replacing the 1970s terminal section with a curved, energy-efficient architectural exterior. Construction on the primary terminal upgrades is underway and scheduled for completion by May 2027. The construction drive shifts the building toward electric heat pump technology and advanced HVAC systems.

Upgraded C3 security scanners have been installed, allowing departing passengers to carry liquids, aerosols, and gels in containers up to two litres. The airport has integrated a solar PV farm alongside the addition of 1,000 new car parking spaces. Shannon Airport received €1.93 million in capital funding under the Regional Airports Programme 2026-2030 for safety and security infrastructure.
