The Shelbourne hotel in Dublin is preparing for a €50m refurbishment that will begin in this month and last for a year. Led by designer Bryan O’Sullivan Studio, the project will focus on renovating 226 guestrooms and aims to preserve the hotel’s historical legacy while introducing a modern, elegant, and locally inspired design.

Archer Hotel Capital, the owner since March 2024, acquired the property for €240m from Kennedy Wilson. The project targets 226 rooms out of 265, covering Queen, Deluxe, and Heritage Premium categories. Bryan O’Sullivan Studio leads the interior design, incorporating custom carpets inspired by Louis le Brocquy and potential artworks from Kerlin Gallery.

The work follows a €35m exterior restoration under previous ownership and comes one year after the hotel’s 200th anniversary in 2024.  Operations continue during the year-long process, with phases to limit disruptions. The redesign blends elements from the hotel’s 1824 origins with contemporary touches.

General manager JP Kavanagh oversees daily functions amid preparations. The investment aims to maintain the hotel’s role in Irish history, including the 1922 drafting of the constitution. Staff coordinate with contractors for the late October start.

Guests receive advance notice of any affected areas. The programme forms part of Archer’s broader portfolio strategy across Europe. Local suppliers provide materials for the interiors. Completion schedules extend through 2026.
