María Josefina Olascoaga has named Silversea Cruises’ second Nova-class ship, Silver Ray, during ceremonies in Lisbon, overseen by Silversea president Bert Hernandez.

Silversea, celebrating 30 years of operation, has served nearly 800,000 passengers and accumulated 13m Venetian Society cruise days since 1994.

The naming party for Silver Ray included speeches from Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty, traditional bagpipers, dance performances, and renditions of national anthems.

Olascoaga, an ocean scientist and professor, co-leads OceanScope, equipping Royal Caribbean Group ships with oceanographic instruments. Silver Ray’s inaugural voyage will start from Lisbon on June 15, with plans to sail the Mediterranean before redeploying to the Americas in December.
