Štajerska in Slovenia has been named the Best Wine Region in Europe for 2027 by European Best Destinations. The region beat more than 90 leading territories. The recognition highlights heritage and quality production as a draw for visitors.

The ranking evaluated grape diversity, tasting room accessibility, landscape quality, and sustainability. Štajerska captured the top spot with the world’s oldest vine in Maribor. The 400-year-old grapevine is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records. Signature wine styles include Šipon, also known as Furmint, alongside sparkling wines, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The region spans towns including Ptuj, Jeruzalem Slovenija, and the Haloze hills. Maribor previously took the title of European Best Wine Capital for 2026. Locals recommend visiting between September and early November for the autumn harvest and St. Martin’s Day celebrations on 11 November. Langhe-Roero-Monferrato in Italy placed second and Ribeira Sacra in Spain placed third.
