The strike at Swissport had been called off after what the union called a breakthrough on the pay and conditions of baggage handlers, check-in staff and ground crew.

he 48 hour strike, poised to begin at 00.01 hours on Friday 23 December, would have seen over 1,500 frontline airport staff walk out in 18 airports including Stansted, where Swissport handle Ryanair, and Belfast.

Workers were offered a 4.5pc per annum per year, but at the cost of a restructuring of overtime arrangements.

Separate talks are continuing in an attempt to avert a separate strike by British Airways cabin crew but United chief Len McCluskey said progress was “painfully slow”
