  • Travel cancellations for Spain’s election week rose 60pc.
  • The election is on 29 November 2026.
  • Travellers are concerned about polling station duty.
  • New bookings have remained steady.
  • CEAV has asked for standardised exemptions for pre-booked trips.

Travel cancellations for the week of Spain’s 29 November 2026 general election have increased by 60pc according to online travel agency Destinia. The rise is compared with other weeks in November and December. Travellers are cancelling or changing plans to cast votes in person or out of fear of being selected to work at polling stations.

New reservation rates have remained steady despite the spike in cancellations for existing bookings. Being booked on a trip prior to the election call does not automatically excuse someone from serving at a polling station. Individuals must submit a request to the local electoral board. The Spanish Confederation of Travel Agencies has urged authorities to standardise exemptions for pre-booked trips.

Standard insurance policies may not automatically cover cancellation fees due to election duty. Travellers are advised to check policy terms as cancellation penalties typically increase closer to departure. Local electoral boards will evaluate excuses on a case-by-case basis. A similar exception was temporarily granted during the July 2023 elections due to extreme circumstances.
