Two thrown from ride, two trapped in Dreamworld accident: four dead at Gold Coast theme park

QAS Officer Gavin Fuller said the people were aged from 32 to their early 40s, and were caught in a conveyor belt at the park.

Dreamworld is described as Australia’s largest theme park, with 40 rides and attractions. It is located at Coomera on the Gold Coast, 60km south of Brisbane. Its most popular ride and one of the ioriginal rides dating form 1968 is Thunder River Rapids, considered a quite tame family ride. Up to six people are strapped into one circular cart with a loose belt around the abdomen, then the ride travels down a water track. It travels up to 45 kilometres an hour through “turbulent rapids”: Before departing the ride, guests are brought back up to the level of the station bya conveyer belt, where the accident happen.

Ardent Leisure, the operator of the Dreamworld theme park on the Gold Coast, had its share price fall by as much as 8 per cent following news of a tragedy at the venue.

The Busch Gardens theme park in Tampa closed its Congo River Rapids ride for checks after the accident.
