Airline lobby organisations and trade unions have called for immediate suspension and reassessment of the EU-Qatar air transport agreement following the dismissal of a senior European Commission transport official amid corruption concerns. The European Network Airlines’ Association European Cockpit Association and European Transport Workers’ Federation cited weakened confidence in the negotiation process after the sacking of Henrik Hololei for administrative infringements including alleged acceptance of free flights and perks from Qatar. The provisional application continues despite stalled ratification by several member states including France Germany and the Netherlands.
The core aspects include calls to suspend the 2021 agreement, dismissal of Henrik Hololei over alleged breaches, ongoing criminal investigation into corruption claims, provisional application pending full ratification, and demands for renewed transparent process before proceeding.
The airports council has responded to the request by urging that the agreement be retained.
The groups shared in a written statement “We urge EU Member States to acknowledge these concerns and withdraw political support for the agreement at this stage thereby encouraging a reassessment of its continuation under the current conditions”.
