Driven by a desire to avoid intense summer heatwaves and massive crowds, high-net-worth travellers are embracing what the industry calls the “fallcation”. Extreme summer heat in southern Europe has made exploring cities or relaxing at Mediterranean resorts uncomfortable during July and August, while overcrowded landmarks and fully booked Michelin-starred restaurants have turned summer into an exercise in frustration for premium jetsetters.
The massive pivot means the shoulder season has lost its bargain status, with hotel rates across luxury European hubs now rivaling and sometimes surpassing summer prices. The French Riviera has seen rates up 179%, Greek Isles up 131%, and Puglia up 78%.
