Crumlin cyclist Shay Elliott was the first Irishman to hold the yellow jersey in the tour de Frnce after his Jambes to Rubaix third stage win of the 1963 Tour, Shay punctured twice but rejoined and sprinted away 6km from the finish to win the stage over cobbled roads. He wore the Yellow Jersey for three days. Report by English broadcaster John Whale June 25th 1963. Shay died tragically in 1971.
