  • Wizz Air sidelines six of ten A321XLR aircraft orders
  • Originally ordered 47 A321XLRs for long-range expansion
  • Converted 36 orders into standard A321neo aircraft
  • Remaining XLRs integrated as standard A321neos
  • Pratt and Whitney GTF engine reliability issues continue

Wizz Air has decided to sideline six out of its ten Airbus A321-200NY aircraft following a major strategic shift where the airline scaled back its commitment to the extra-long-range variant. The budget carrier originally ordered 47 A321XLRs to expand into longer-range markets such as routes connecting Europe to South Asia and India. Following the closure of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the company found that the long-range business model no longer aligned with its primary network strategy.

Wizz Air has subsequently converted 36 of its initial XLR orders into standard A321neo aircraft. This leaves the airline with a significantly downsized fleet of just 11 total A321XLR aircraft on its books. The remaining aircraft are being integrated directly into the standard fleet as regular short-to-medium-range A321neos. Wizz Air executives stated that they will not demark or distinguish them as a separate aircraft type.

Operating the heavier XLR variants on shorter routes incurs higher structural and operating costs. The airline has faced ongoing reliability hurdles with Pratt and Whitney GTF engines. Additionally, a lack of ETOPS certification prevents Wizz Air from utilising the extra range for transatlantic routes. Attempts to mitigate the financial burden by transferring undelivered orders to other aviation partners fell through, forcing Wizz Air to absorb the excess specialised capacity into its core regional operations.
