Europe spends $2 trillion of the $6.15 trillion spent globally on leisure travel, according to the latest 2026 Economic Impact Research released by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). The continent successfully captured exactly 32.5pc of all global holiday spending, with leisure travel making up 80.5pc of all travel expenses globally and outperforming business trips. Southern European countries acted as the main engines for this financial boom, with France recording leisure spending growth of 3.6pc, Spain expanding by 2.6pc, Italy increasing by 2.2pc, and Türkiye remaining a dominant global demand hotspot.

The travel council predicts that Europe will maintain its lead throughout the remainder of 2026, with evolving global travel patterns continuing to redirect crowds away from other parts of the world and into the Mediterranean. European leisure spending is projected to grow by 3.7pc, exceeding the global average projection of 3.1pc. Italy is expected to lead the upcoming expansion phase with a 4.7pc increase, followed closely by Spain at 4.3pc and Türkiye at 4.1pc. A combination of excellent flight connectivity, diverse cultures, and peak summer demand drew millions of high-spending visitors to these four key markets.

The findings highlight the region’s role in driving the global tourism economy, with the WTTC emphasising that popular European hotspots must continue investing in infrastructure, sustainable crowd management, and regional flight paths to sustain the heavy influx of vacationers.
