Irish families have been driving a major surge in last-minute summer holiday bookings as the school holiday period enters its final weeks
Data from package holiday specialist On the Beach Ireland has revealed that 11.9pc of all Irish summer bookings are now made with trips departing within 14 days. Online searches for getaways departing in the final week of August have jumped by 22pc in 48 hours. Major online travel platforms including loveholidays Ireland have reported a 16pc year-on-year increase in overall late bookings as travellers navigate rising costs.
The “GAA Effect” has been cited as a factor in the delayed booking pattern, with families turning attention to late escapes following a summer of All-Ireland sporting excitement. Spanish beach locations have remained the absolute favourite for late summer travel, with coastal towns including Estepona proving highly popular. Lanzarote in the Canary Islands has become the most requested last-minute destination for families flying out of Dublin, while the Greek islands and the Algarve have seen high traffic for final-week availability.
Hospitality and travel operators have anticipated a rush for last-minute deals offering sunshine escapes before the school term resumes. Travel experts have recommended flexibility on travel days, with departures on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday yielding savings compared with weekend flights. Regional airports including Cork, Shannon, Knock, Kerry and Belfast have offered additional late flight options. Package bookings through Irish operators including Budget Travel Ireland and Cassidy Travel have typically unlocked promotional rates compared with separate bookings.
