Wicklow comes from the Irish “Cill Mhantáin,” meaning “church of the toothless one,” possibly referring to a saint or a local figure, though some suggest a Norse origin from “Víkingaló” (Viking meadow). The etymology is debated, likely rooted in Old Irish or Norse. The first recorded use of “Cill Mhantáin” appears in the Annals of Ulster around the 8th century, with “Wicklow” adopted in English records by the 12th century during Norman settlement.
