Wexford comes from the Old Norse “Veisafjǫrðr,” meaning “inlet of the mudflats” or “bay of the sands,” from “veis” (mud or sand) and “fjǫrðr” (fjord), named by Viking settlers for the harbour’s features. The etymology is rooted in Norse, adapted into English. The first recorded use of “Wexford” appears in the Annals of the Four Masters around the 10th century as “Loch Garman” (Irish name), with “Wexford” used in English records by the 11th century during Viking and Norman influence.
