A new multi-modal transport hub on Waterford’s North Quays is on track for completion in late 2027, with physical construction scheduled to finish by the third quarter of that year, followed by a period of rigorous safety certification and testing. The facility will relocate train services from Plunkett Station and integrate intercity bus links as part of the broader North Quays Strategic Development Zone regeneration plan. The project includes a 207-metre sustainable transport bridge crossing the River Suir, which is scheduled to open ahead of the station’s operational launch.

Iarnród Éireann is finalising track realignments, electrical systems, and signalling upgrades ahead of mandatory safety certification, while teams are currently finishing internal fit-out works including offices, toilets, lifts, and passenger information screens. Outdoor plazas, passenger set-down areas, and a western footbridge at Dock Road are also taking shape. Heavy engineering crews are building railway flood defences to protect the tracks from climate change, and the entire hub will undergo strict testing to obtain official sign-off from transport authorities.

This €260m project relocates the old Plunkett Train Station approximately 1 km down the river and will seamlessly connect rail, city buses, and local greenways. The development also acts as the foundation for a new urban district featuring 350 homes, a hotel, and office spaces. Specific bus journeys and their frequencies have not yet been confirmed, but the Bus Connects plan will extend bus services to the new train station on the North Quays, with a facility for buses to stop directly outside the station that also includes intercity buses.

Seán Dobbs, Senior Engineer with Waterford City and County Council, shared: “The Bus Connects plan will extend bus services to the train station on the North Quays, and there is a facility for buses to stop directly outside the train station that also includes intercity buses, so it’s not just local bus services.”
