Two thirds of holidaymakers will stay within Europe for their next trip, according to an AA Ireland survey.

AA Ireland carried out the poll among 1,180 respondents and revealed that 64.8pc of holidaymakers planned to remain in Europe for their forthcoming holiday. The survey highlighted concerns over rising jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that affected long-haul travel costs. Holidaymakers cited shorter flight times and lower overall expenses as key reasons for choosing European destinations over more distant locations.

The research confirmed that many Irish travellers adjusted their plans amid warnings of potential fuel surcharges on package holidays and increased airfares. Respondents who selected European trips often mentioned familiar destinations such as Spain and Portugal that offered reliable sunshine without the need for long flights. The survey took place as airlines and tour operators monitored developments in global fuel markets and passed on some cost increases to consumers.
