The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, has delivered a substantial tourism boost across the path of totality, with Spain receiving the largest economic impact due to its population, accessibility and more favourable weather prospects. Official Spanish Ministry of Economy estimates projected approximately 446,700 additional visitors for the week of August 10-16, generating a net economic impact of about €347-348 million. Hotel bookings surged sharply, with Amadeus data showing rises of 366 percent in Bilbao, 292 percent in Asturias and 137 percent in Valencia year-on-year, while flight bookings to path airports increased 25 percent. Authorities deployed more than 33,500 police and set up 350 official viewing sites, with reports of up to 660 locations, as millions gathered in cities and rural areas to witness the country’s first total eclipse in over a century.
Iceland also experienced a significant surge, though constrained by capacity and weather challenges. Hotels in Reykjavík and the path sold out months in advance, with rates often doubling or exceeding $1,000 per night, while a record 31 cruise ships carried approximately 53,000 passengers and crew off the western coast. Weather was challenging for many, with cloudy and rainy conditions impacting views, though some experienced breaks allowing glimpses of the corona. Portugal’s boost was more localised and brief, confined to a narrow strip in the northeast where totality lasted only 26 seconds, generating a possible injection of approximately €25 million. Greenland remained largely the domain of expedition cruises, with high-end Arctic voyages priced between €8,000 and €30,000 per person. The event tested local logistics, including traffic management and wildfire prevention, with Spain’s interior minister emphasising extreme preventive measures due to high temperatures and vegetation dryness.
The eclipse has highlighted the growth of astrotourism, with search interest in the phenomenon rising sharply, as the event drove large-scale movement of people into the path of totality. Major cities and rural villages across northern and central Spain, including A Coruña, Bilbao, Zaragoza, León and Burgos, benefited from the influx, with hundreds of thousands of visitors from overseas, including the United States, Japan, Canada and Australia. Exact final attendance and spending figures were still being refined immediately after the event on August 13, but pre-event projections and on-the-day reports consistently showed large-scale movement and economic activity, with the event expected to drive further interest in astrotourism ahead of the 2027 “Eclipse of the Century” across southern Spain, northern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
The Spanish Interior Ministry shared, “High temperatures, the accumulated dryness of vegetation and the intense pressure on natural areas due to projected travel necessitate extreme preventive measures.”
