- Spanish tourism grew 3.5pc compared to previous year
- August solar eclipse generated astrotourism wave
- Middle East conflict diverted traffic to Spain
- August welcomed 12.3m international tourists
- Exceltur maintains 2.7pc growth forecast for tourism GDP
Spanish tourism closed a positive summer with growth of 3.5pc compared with the previous year. The August solar eclipse and diverted traffic linked to the Middle East conflict contributed to the performance. Higher costs including fuel and labour have limited company results. Exceltur maintains its full-year forecast of 2.7pc growth in tourism GDP, reaching nearly €227,000m.
The historic total solar eclipse on 12 August 2026 generated a wave of astrotourism.ms of visitors flooded into inland, rural regions like Castile and León, Galicia, and Aragon. Protracted instability and safety concerns in the Middle East caused European tour operators and travellers to pivot toward the Western Mediterranean. Safe-haven demand redirected vacationers away from traditional Eastern Mediterranean and Gulf destinations into Spain.
Despite record-breaking visitor arrivals, with August alone pulling in 12.3m international tourists, industry alliance Exceltur noted that the 3.5pc growth in activity did not fully translate to a proportional boom in business profits. Local tourism companies faced squeezed margins due to surging overhead, high energy bills, and operational cost inflation. A sharp 7pc spike in operational overheads heavily compressed corporate profit margins despite a 4.1pc rise in overall sales.
