American Airlines has committed to installing Starlink across its entire mainline fleet, expanding from a limited Airbus programme to more than 1,030 aircraft. Installations will begin in early 2027 across more than 500 Airbus narrowbodies, over 400 Boeing narrowbodies and at least 130 Boeing widebodies. The airline has not disclosed a completion date or the programme’s cost, and it excludes American Eagle regional aircraft.

The decision turns a half-fleet plan into a full-fleet bet on consistent connectivity. American’s May commitment to equip only its Airbus narrowbodies was questioned for its limited scope. The corrected plan follows another reversal in August when American announced it would restore seatback screens across its narrowbody fleet. American Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden placed the decision in practical terms.

Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit network offers lower latency for streaming, video calls and real-time work. Its terminal can deliver up to 1 gigabit per second, shared among passengers. American already provides AT&T-sponsored free Wi-Fi to AAdvantage members. Delta plans to begin installing Amazon Leo on an initial 500 aircraft in 2028.

Heather Garboden shared “Our customers have told us that dependable connectivity can make a meaningful difference in how they spend their time in the air. Whether they are livestreaming a favorite show, gaming, collaborating in real time on an important work deal, scrolling social media or online shopping, Starlink will give our customers countless options to make the most of their time while traveling. Just as importantly, it provides the foundation for future innovations that will further enhance the customer experience.”
