Airbnb has introduced optional Weather Protection insurance in ten European countries through a partnership with Chubb European Group. The product provides daily payouts if heavy rain threatens to disrupt a holiday. The coverage is available to guests residing in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

The product is parametric insurance meaning payouts trigger automatically when rainfall crosses a set threshold without needing to file a claim. Daily payouts range between €50 and €1,000 depending on the country and policy terms. Triggers apply if at least 1.5mm of rain falls in an hour between 8am and 8pm local time at the stay’s location.

Rainfall is tracked automatically via data from NASA, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and NOAA. Guests can select the insurance at checkout or via the Add to your trip button up to seven days before check-in. The policy covers rainfall only and does not apply to other weather events.
