The Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue in New York is to close for extensive restoration works. Opened in 1907, the landmark property has been one of the city’s most recognisable luxury hotels. The closure will allow comprehensive renovation of the historic building.

The property’s operator, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, revealed that the 119-year-old landmark will close in January 2027 for a project expected to last at least four years. The shutdown is necessary for a historical preservation-compliant restoration of the 18-story building’s landmark exterior facade, determined to be too disruptive to remain open during construction.

The closure will take all 282 guest rooms and suites offline, meaning the hotel likely will not reopen until 2031 at the earliest. The Palm Court, which has hosted afternoon tea for more than a century, will also close alongside the grand event spaces. Christmas 2026 will be the final holiday season for visitors to experience the lobby decorations and the Plaza Christmas Tree.
